The Shifts That Changed Everything for My Gut

For years, I felt like a prisoner to my digestion.
Chronic bloating. Constipation that made me feel heavy, foggy, and completely disconnected from my body. I micromanaged everything I ate, skipped meals when I felt too backed up, avoided plans, and spiralled down rabbit holes of gut health advice online.
And the hardest part? I was a Naturopathic medical student at the time.
I had access to education, tools, and protocols- and yet, I was still stuck. Still bloated. Still backed up. Still anxious about every bite of food.
It wasn’t until early in my career that I stopped trying to "fix" my gut and started asking better questions:
- Was food really the root of all my symptoms?
- Did I need to kill off SIBO or eliminate dysbiosis to feel better?
- Was healing really about avoiding gluten, dairy, or only eating organic?
- Did I need the latest supplement or most expensive test to finally feel better?
The answer to all of those, I discovered, was a gentle but resounding: No.
The truth? I had been focusing on the wrong things. I was following fear-based advice and ignoring the actual foundations of gut health: rhythm, routines, the right kind of fibre, and nervous system "regulation" (backed by evidence, not pseudoscience).
Here are the shifts that changed everything for me
(and now shape the way I help others)
- I stopped skipping meals and started eating regularly. I used to think eating less or waiting longer between meals would help reduce bloating (hello disordered eating disguised as "wellness"). In reality, it was doing the opposite. Once I started fuelling my body at consistent intervals, I supported the natural motility rhythms that keep things moving. This was uncomfortable at first (and I definitely leaned on counselling & other nervous system support tools) but over time, it was one of the most powerful shifts I made.
- I let go of food rules. I stopped labeling food as "good" or "bad." I stopped fearing carbs and gluten just because someone online said to. Instead, I focused on what made me feel nourished and energized. I learned how to understand food reactions (based on what the evidence said) in the context of constipation, not fear.
- I made nervous system regulation a daily non-negotiable. No more saying, "I don’t have time." I began weaving in micro-moments of regulation throughout the day- before meals, during stress, in between patients. When your body feels safe, your gut can finally do its job.
- I cleaned up my information diet. I unfollowed accounts that promoted rigid thinking, disordered eating disguised as "wellness", black-and-white advice, or fear-based protocols. I stopped chasing "the one answer" or "the fix" and embraced nuance. Most of my answers now start with, "it depends," because that's what real medicine looks like.
- I stopped chasing shiny protocols. No more jumping on the newest microbiome test or supplement stack. I simplified. I started focusing on what was sustainable, strategic, and rooted in research.
- I slowed down and started listening. I created space in my day to feel urges, to pause, to eat without rushing, to rest. I let my body lead. I gave myself permission to stop forcing my gut to work, and instead, supported it with consistency and care.
These shifts didn’t just help me feel better. They became the foundation for how I now help others.
Because what I needed wasn’t another protocol or elimination diet.
I needed RHYTHM.
Enter: The Gut Rhythm Method™
The Gut Rhythm Method™ is my 4-phase framework designed to help you retrain your body to poop regularly, without the fear, restriction, or supplement overload.
It includes:
- Root Cause Clarity: We figure out what type of constipation you’re actually dealing with (IBS-C, dyssynergic defecation, slow transit, etc.) so we stop guessing and start choosing the right tools.
- Reset: We clear out backup safely (often using short-term laxative support) to create space for your gut to function more normally again.
- Rhythms & Routines: We rebuild the natural timing cues and lifestyle foundations that your gut relies on: consistent eating, movement, stress support, and nervous system regulation.
- Right Kind of Fibre (and Food): We bring food back in, strategically. No more fear-based restriction. Just the right kinds of fibre at the right time, based on your body’s current needs and capacity.
This is the method I wish I had 15 years ago.
It’s not about doing more.
It’s about doing what actually works- CONSISTENTLY!
